SurviveMISS History

The University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Cancer Institute houses the University Cancer Care specialized team of breast cancer specialists. Their goals are to eradicate breast cancer and to care for the person battling the disease. Its patient- centered treatment program, led by Dr. Barbara Craft since 2010, typically sees younger women (in their early 40’s), many of whom have triple negative breast cancer, a type that is more difficult to treat.

"Young women diagnosed with breast cancer face unique issues when dealing with this disease, including more serious strains of the disease, fertility questions and barriers, partner/child concerns, career implications, sometimes severe financial ramifications and more,” says Dr. Craft. These issues helped lead her to joining with Louisiana and Alabama in a collaborative partnership to form the Gulf States Young Breast Cancer Survivor Network, with the goal of raising awareness and improving the quality of life of young breast cancer survivors in Mississippi.

SurviveMISS provides targeted online resources for young women facing breast cancer in Mississippi, with the central focus of improving their quality of life through education, support and networking. The SurviveMISS website contains a variety of national, state, and local resources.  The site also is a part of a greater group providing local and state information for Louisiana and Alabama, ranging from educational and technical information on breast cancer to more day-to-day practical advice for young breast cancer survivors.
